Bradford hosts all‑day event marking Daphne Oram’s 100th birthday

A day‑long celebration in Bradford gathers artists and award winners to reflect on Oram’s lasting impact on electronic music.

The city of Bradford is staging an all‑day programme to mark the centenary of pioneering electronic composer Daphne Oram, whose work is now widely acknowledged as foundational to the genre. Claire Biddles conducted interviews with a range of participants, from musicians who knew Oram personally to previous recipients of the Oram Award, to gauge her influence.

Oram, a co‑founder of the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop in 1958, was among the first composers to integrate electronic tape, turntablism and musique concrète into her pieces. Although her contributions were largely overlooked until after her death in 2003, she is now celebrated as one of the twentieth‑century’s most important electronic music figures. The event highlights her enduring legacy for DJs, producers and club‑goers alike.

The coverage of the celebration was first reported by The Quietus.
